BUD
LIGHT OFFSHORE RACE TEAM TO TACKLE LAKE PONTCHARTRAIN
Team
looks forward to rough, bumpy water
KENNER,
LA (July 7, 2008) – The Dave Scott Bud Light Offshore Race Team has announced
its entry in the Al Copeland Memorial Powerboat Races August 1 – 3 in Kenner,
Louisiana, just outside New Orleans.
Laketown
Park will host the weekend of non-stop action and excitement. The park will open to spectators August
1, 2 and 3 at 10 a.m. Admission is
$10 for a one-day pass, $15 for a two-day pass and $20 for a three-day pass and
can be purchased at the gate.
Children under 12 accompanied by a paying adult get in
free.
Once
inside the park, spectators will see some of the world’s fastest offshore race
boats on display in Race Village.
One of those boats, the Bud Light Extreme boat, a 50’ Mystic, has been
clocked at 194 mph. Dave Scott,
owner of the Bud Light team, knows what it takes to champion a winning
boat. His team is one of the most
successful offshore race teams in history, having earned eight world
championships and ten national championship titles since 2001.
Powered
by two 1200 hp Mercury Racing engines, the Bud Light boat weighs 11,750 pounds
and runs on Chevron Phillips 118 octane.
“This boat likes for conditions to be a little windy and bumpy,” Scott
said. “That frees up the boat. She runs much better in chop than she
does in flat water.”
Scott
said he’s looking forward to racing where legendary Al Copeland made offshore
history in his bright yellow Popeyes/Diet
Coke boats. “Al was a pioneer
in offshore racing,” Scott said.
“He realized the potential of the sport and helped make it more spectator
friendly. He grabbed the nation’s
attention with his flamboyance and his movie star race partners.”
Pontchartrain
is the largest lake in Louisiana and the largest salt water lake in the
world.
Its
waters can be devilishly unpredictable.
The winds on the lake are shifty.
Because the lake is so shallow, the water conditions can range from flat,
to rough and choppy.
“I’ve
seen boats break apart during races on Lake Pontchartrain,” said Gary Knight,
Slidell resident and former helicopter pilot for Al Copeland’s race team. “A 15-knot wind means 3- to 4-foot waves
out on the lake, with a wave sequence of 5 feet. The boats and the crews in them take a
pretty good pounding in those conditions.”
Boats
will test the morning of August 2 and take to the water in the afternoon for a
race consisting of half laps for each class. Fans will be treated to a full afternoon
of racing on August 3 as 25 canopied boats compete for the checkered flags in
each respective class. Scott and
his team are looking forward to putting on an exciting show for their fans. “We’re proud to represent Anheuser-Busch
again this season,” Scott says. “We
encourage everyone to come out and see this beautiful Mystic and the awesome
speeds she’s capable of.”
